Kind of functions as a lore dump episode, but told in a fun way. I love that he keeps introducing new characters and expanding the world.

This book focuses mostly on Fone Bone and Smiley Bone. I'm okay with that because Phoney drives me crazy. He has become much more than amusingly jerkish.

So, the two I like travel to the mountains to return a baby Rat Creature back to his own kind. On the way, they are interrupted by Roque Jaw , or “Rock Jaw”, as these two cuties call him, a giant mountain lion. They spend the rest of their journey teamed up with a band of orphans to escape Rock Jaw.

The orphans may be my favorite characters to date and I hope they stay.

This was a fun and exciting volume of Bone, but it felt like kind of a detour from the main story. That said, it might have hurt the pace of this escapade to cut back and forth between other stories (as most fantasy books tend to do, to my frustration).

I’m fond of the possums; glad to see them. I liked the subplot with the baby rat creature, but was sorry to have no updates on Grandma, Thorn, or the situation in town.

I'm still fond of the characters and their path through the story, but right now it's the path that bothers me. "Big Mythology" + "Classic fantasy" meets Mickey and his friends from Disney was a cute idea at first, but I'm trying to see the light at the end of the tunnel, and there doesn't seem to be much awaiting. After 5 volumes that is a problem, we're beyond introductions.

The Rat Creatures are terribly incompetent too, to the point of annoyance (a bunch of animal kiddies jumping around can bother them enough to free their prisoners?). I've yet to see ONE reason to take them seriously as a threat.

But it's an okay volume that I enjoyed well enough. Now back to Phoney who irritates me to no end...maybe volume 6 is the one to redeem him? Or will it all just come together at the end? Guess we'll find soon enough...
