This book was on my TBR for soooo long and I think this is why I was a tiny little bit disappointed with it. I believe I let it sit on my TBR for too long and I am no longer the audience for this book or perhaps this is just not what I am looking for in a book right now! But that's totally okay. I did like the academic rivals to lovers, as someone who's usually in the top of the class. I liked to see how Alice Sun evolved, how her dreams, her ambitions changed and that she decided to pursue her passion: English. Obviously I believe that Henry Li is just everyone's dream bf, but I felt like overall the characters lacked something? Like I don't know exactly why but I feel like we could have focused maybe on other characters more?
Overall a good book, loved the magical surrealism of it with her invisibility power and the fact that I was set in Beijing!

4,25⭐️ goddamnit it hit too close sometimes

The neglected ones, the unlucky ones, the ones who want more than they've been give. The ones who have to crawl and scrape and fight their way up from the very bottom, who have to game a system designed for them to lose.

the greatest compliment i can give is when i finish a ya-novel and think, dang i wish this had been around when i was a kid. charming & clever & powerful!
lighthearted fast-paced

Ann Liang has this way of writing that is simple but strong in just the right places. Like, tell me why I was tearing up when Alice and Henry were literally just talking. In the beginning, I couldn't help but compare this to Ann Liang's 2024 academic-rivals-to-lovers, I Hope This Doesn't Find You. I don't know when I stopped, but by the end of the book, I was feeling so much for and with Alice that I surprised myself. Definitely worth a read.
