This is the best book I’ve ever taught my 10th graders hands down. What a good time for them and me.

Read this out loud with my kids. The original has too much language. This one still has heavy subject matter but it's told mostly in an entertaining way and with some great life lessons. It was a great way to expose my children to the way other cultures live, the hardships other kids have to go through. And that they can succeed anyway. Lots to talk about as we read it together.

It’s almost unbelievable the life that Trevor led before moving to America. The systematic violence and oppression in South Africa was shocking. Trevor’s mom was so strong in many ways, but weak in others. It was a fascinating read. I’m very interested to see how this will play out as a movie soon.
