"Folks like to talk about revenge like it's a righteous thing but it's just hate in a nicer suit."
This book has such a strong concept, but it's the delivery and heart that has my brain melting in the best way! Ike and Buddy Lee knew that they could never stop the haunting of the brutal deaths of their sons and the harsh and unspoken words due to their own homophobia. My boys got ACTIVE and went on a hunt that got so twisted, I would be laughing one moment, tears stinging another and screaming the next!
I understand thoughts of critics who fear that Ike and Buddy Lee only became accepting after something so horrific. However, I feel this was not the lesson. Ike and Buddy Lee had many regrets, but they did not magically become allies. Instead, I think this book does an incredible job at criticizing those who cannot accept people regardless of who they love, while also just reminding everyone that all that should matter is being good humans. There are so many scenes woven in this tale that put a mirror and illuminated just how terrible they were to their sons. How hypocritical this all was in the aftermath of tragedy. Yet still, S. A. Cosby also created such depth in these characters that their love was never in question and how incredible their sons were in spite of it all.
There are constant ways that Ike and Buddy Lee never believed they had atoned for their inaction and terrible roles as fathers, however they used it to fuel an epic tale of vengeance that I won't stop thinking about for a long time.

An entertaining, John Wick-style adventure about two conservative dads, one Black and one White, who try to seek revenge for their murdered gay sons. It was action-packed yet still tender (lots of bits about them coming to terms with the way there sons were that were presented pretty authentically and didn't feel like pandering). Buddy Lee was a pretty hilarious character that balanced the seriousness out nicely. I can't wait to see this on screen!

This book read like a tv series. I think people that like gruesome, action series would love this book.
Because it was like a series, parts of the plot are predictable but that did not take away from the book at all.
I loved the found family, vengeance, and mostly the recompense of the main characters.
Mixed in with the action and violence was a lot of humor and love.
Excellent. I hope it gets made into a movie or series.

I’m sure there’s an audience for this, but it isn’t me. It was a bit too “gritty” for my taste. The homophobia and misogyny and violence was all a bit on the excessive side. I think we are supposed to sympathize with these dads and to an extent, I do, but “accepting” your gay sons only after they’ve been murdered and then staying pretty homophobic throughout the book was hard to side with. I also didn’t feel like the writing was particularly good. There are only so many cringy similes I can take. I generally really like SA Cosby, but not so much this one.
