I have never read anything like this. Probably the first book that caused me to feel rather than think about what I've read. Highly recommend.

Quite a harrowing first read on my Sicilian holiday but idk, I enjoyed it despite the bonkers concepts. It felt refreshing and raw, just like a live fish swallowed whole (as the main character does).

This was by far one of the most unique books I’ve read this year. I loved the mix of art, poetry and the imaginative, descriptive style. Definitely not a usual read for me but the cover and premise kept catching my attention and I have no regrets having picked up and finished this book. I let the story flow over me.

I highly recommend it!!

Trippy and deeply unsettling. Beautiful prose and poems, and definitely more of a vibes > plot type of book, more so than I was expecting.

"I beg in song, beg in scream. I  beg through love, but I beg in vain".
This has been one of my favorite reads in a long time. It is extremely informative of Inuit mythology and culture from a very spiritual and human point of view. There are indeed tough passages but I don't think it gloats over certain difficult topics such as rape, violence etc. It does also take a lot of reading outside the box and from a critical perspective to understand the passages about having sex with animal entities.
My favorite part was, no doubt, the descriptions of nature and the submerged self the narrator  creates. Her tenderness and strength and her empathy towards the natural world are outstandingly beautifully written.
Would absolutely read it again.

It was more graphic than I expected (assault) and is written in a more poetry-like style than I like.

A mix of poetry, autobiographical material, and magical realism/folklore (plus, if you're listening to the audiobook, throat singing!). Tagaq is an Inuit throatsinger who grew up in 1970s Nunavut (a far Northern Canadian territory). Tagaq does not shy away from the alcoholism and sexual abuse that scarred her childhood and the lasting impact this has had. The last quarter takes a hard turn into what (I presume is) magical realism, with Tagaq writing that she was impregnated by the Northern Lights and gave birth to twins. Although I'm pretty sure the twins are metaphorical and not actual babies (I tried to Google it, but came up with no conclusive results), I couldn't get past the narrative blaming the male twin for being an energy vampire that drains and kills Tagaq's family,
Spoilerwhich ultimately leads Tagaq trying to kill him
