It had a nice story but was kind of boring
I have read a Sarah dessen book.
--------------------
i haven't done a nice long review in a good while so let's see what happens. this book follows a girl named louna who works with her mother to plan weddings. she meets Ambrose at one of the weddings, and he earns a job working for her mother.
ambrose. I read previous reviews that said Ambrose was annoying, but I really liked him. a lot more than louna. you could tell he really liked her, and I liked when he was first hired, he wrote a list of things he was noticing and one of them was ."Louna doesn't get out much.". and I cracked up. he was challenging her in the best ways, and it was so cute how he did the bet so he could ask her out. yes, he was annoying, but he was so sweet, and i really liked him as a character. there was also where he found out about Ethan (ill get into that later), and he was sweet about it and respected she needed space. it was annoying how she got mad at him when he brought her up, and believed that she couldn't fall in love more than once smh.
the bet. I liked how louna and ambrose had to be different people with louna having to start dating other people while Ambrose had to be committed to one girl. it was funny when louna dated mccallum and literally he wrote a book ABOUT PLOWS AND IT WAS IN THE PLOWS POV. I literally screamed because that was so ridiculous/awful like that isn't a good idea for a book. it was worse because he literally thought that was a good idea for a book. ambrose had this habit to date multiple people at once, and it was funny when he was dating two girls at the exact same time and got confronted about it.
side storyline. so this book did alternating chapters focusing on her relationship with Ethan and the major reason this book got three stars was because I understood the theme that author wanted to make but I really didn't like it. AT ALL. ethan was a sweet boy, and it's crazy she fell that much in love with him after only hanging out with him for less than a day. this storyline was kind of waste of my time in my opinion, and I thought how he died was something that you could see coming, as the author foreshadowed it, but I didn't get the feeling of sadness and sentiment that the author wanted.
I think my problem with Sarah dessen's books was I don't really like her female protagonisst. they just have the most annoying development, and I really don't like the climax. literally after she freaked out about ambrose, she goes on to date ben and it's super surface-level. there isn't any really emotions involved, and it was awful she strung him alone and I didn't like reading about it. hm.

this book was a solid read and will probably be the last Sarah dessen book I read in a while.

This is not my usual genre. To be honest, I don't know why I even bought this. But I did.
I struggled with it a LOT. 25-50% through, I was forcing myself to read because I was too stubborn to give up. Something shifted around 65% and I got very caught up in it, though. I think it was probably around where we hear the details about her last boyfriend. It hooked me and didn't let go.
It was a quick read and a good break from, like I said, the usual. One thing I absolutely did not like was the very ending with Ben. Kind of glossed over something big there.

i just love dessen, her books might be formulaic but it's a formula that i always find comforting and nostalgic. i loved louna as a main character and the commentary on loss and grief was really well done.

That book was very good! Not my one of my favorite Sarah Dessen books, but it was still a great story.
My biggest road block to falling in love with this book was that I wasn’t the biggest fan of Ambrose, the main love interest. Sure, he was a pretty sweet guy by the end, but in the beginning he was completely insufferable. So I didn’t care a whole lot about him and Louna finally getting together.
But in a way, I feel like the story was less about the two of them getting together, and more about Louna learning to open herself up to a new love, and to something different than what she previously experienced. And I really liked that aspect of the story. Louna’s previous relationship backstory made me emotional, and I even teared up a little.
Overall, I was bored by some parts, but other parts really made me feel. 4-4.5 stars.
