This book sucks you right into the world. I love reading novellas because the author only has so much room to work with so everything needs to be purposeful. The setting, atmosphere and dialogue were the most successful parts of this book. Really wonderful example of how to do a short story right. Action packed, addictive characters and clever plotting. Definitely makes me want to read more from this author if this is what they can accomplish in under 200 pages.
Beautifully imagined and written, and I appreciate it intellectually.... but that's all. The Empress of Salt and Fortune was electrifying, a shock to the senses with a lasting hum. This book - just no spark, I guess.

I love this novella series so much, each one is so vibrant and memorable as a little peek into this world with absolutely beautiful storytelling! I loved getting a little more detail about mammoths and their riders from Chih’s perspective, but the real spotlight was the tale of Dieu and Ho Thi Tao. I loved the dark fairytale feeling of their love story, how genuinely dangerous and inhuman but still romantic Ho Thi Tao was, and the way the other tigers interjected into the story all throughout was a really interesting exploration of what is the “true” version of story, wildness, and love! And I just love Vo’s deeply atmospheric writing, so I’ll definitely pick up the next novella in the series soon to spend more time in this fantastical world.
