Vo really is an excellent storyteller and I appreciated how Chih acknowledged that stories are repeated only as they are written in the archives. But that version of the story may be lacking

My least favourite of all the ones I've read. A fast read and enjoyable enough read but I didn't feel moved by it or take away any particular feeling one way or another.

4 stars. Audiobook.
This book had the same beautiful writing and whimsical quality that I lived in Empress of Salt and Fortune, but I felt I wasn’t as connected to the characters this time (thus the 4 stars). I would still HIGHLY recommend this though as it’s stunning in its storytelling and imagery. I was completely captivated by the mammoths in this story and I’m not sure I could tell you why as I’ve never had an interest in them before. But as Vo tells it, I now want one.

Everything I've ever read by Ngji Vo has been brilliant. No "almost" about it.
“They were Dieu’s favorite lines, and she was almost afraid to look up to see how the tiger took them. When you love a thing too much, it is a special kind of pain to show it to others and to see that it is lacking.”

I liked this book better than the first one. I can definitely get behind the premise of a historian going around collecting stories/histories. It's very cute and very compelling. This book was much easier to follow jumping between the story-within-the-story and the in situ action than the first one was. The world building is a little bit abstract, but that's not inherently a bad thing.
Well written, but I'm not sure if I'll continue with the series. Very little happens to allow us to learn about the cleric, or connect the last book to this one.

This was my favourite of the series, pre-reread, and I think it might still be. I love the fact that it's a story exchange, Chih telling stories to get stories in return, and the duelling perspectives on the story.
