Cleric Chih is traveling by mammoth when they are caught by three hungry tigers who can shift into human form. This is a story that is also about stories, and how they change over time. The tigers shifting into human form and the love that emerged was really intriguing. The writing style is immersive and gorgeously descriptive. Overall, it was a wonderful read and I'm looking forward to continuing the series.

Perfectly fine but rambling story that feels like filler between other, better pieces.
It’s insane how good The Empress of Salt and Fortune is, especially in comparison to the rest of the series. I still really like Cleric Chih as a main character, and love the weird situation/cool story-telling plot of the series, but the political intrigue of the first one really got me. This one is fun because it’s Chih vs a couple of tigers committed to eating them, which makes the stakes higher than in other books. It’s also fun because it seems that these can be read in any order without missing anything.

Somewhat different from the first novella, but just as beautiful and tender. Still about the complexity of stories and truth and perspective, intertwined with love. Also, tigers are terrifying.
