I was a big fan of the Kubrick movie before reading the novel. It’s an interesting story about how this novel came about and how it’s actually not a novelization of the movie but a book which was sort of commissioned so that they could build a movie around the book. Anyway, I liked the movie beforehand and thought the novel was ten times better. A better ending that made much more sense.

Unfathomably better than the film. Everything about it just works, and it's ridiculous how well it dances between panic and reflective beauty and an infectious sense of joy and hope, all within an ultimately dry sci-fi story. It takes something fantastic, packages it as something mundane, and reinvents it as something unbelievable. Just a fantastic read.

Probably my favorite movie is 2001, and I know that part of that is due to its mystery. I was hesitant to finally read this book, but now I'm immensely grateful that I have. Not only does it provide much more detail and context, it has a lucid conclusion but still exciting about what is implied to come.
