A great book to read for Juneteeth. A child upset at having little control over her bedtime and a father who uses this as a teaching moment. This book reminds us of the struggle of slavery, the fight for civil rights, and most importantly to remember and continue the forward momentum that is to be celebrated!

I'm glad the father was patient with Mazie, even though she was upset at the word No. He explained to her calmly about Juneteenth and her great great great grandfather. An how he and others couldn't say No to the things they had to do.

Juneteenth for Mazie is written and illustrated by Floyd Cooper. Mazie is a typical kid who wants to push the boundaries of her world a little bit. She gets mad when she can't eat what she wants, go outside when she wants, or stay up as late as she wants to. Her father teachers about a time when African American men and women were also not allowed to do as they liked. He explains the Juneteenth celebration to Maizie and they celebrate together.

A beautiful book with a great history lesson that is given in small bits that will form the basis of more complex lessons down the road. It is a good introduction to the hard subject of slavery and emancipation. This book would work for a K-2 storytime, especially one with the themes of celebrations, freedom, struggle, or summer.

I really like this one, but I didn't like the part where it stated, "They continued to work, but this time they were payed for their hard work." I know kids might not need /all/ the "information" but I know that slaves were not paid and if they were it was so small of a payment that it would not be fair to call it a payment.
