this one was..... a bit disappointing for the end of the arc? but overall the series wasn't terrible, just a little... wandering. i wish darktail hadn't died back in book 3 - i liked when the villain was around for the whole arc like in the first series. it would've also been more interesting if we'd gotten even a HINT of darktail's existence prior to this series, but, you know, they don't think that far i guess.

anyway, the fact it took a whole arc to settle skyclan by the lake feels appropriate, and i do like that it took that long, i just wish it was a bit more... cohesive? visions of shadows would've been a better title for the arc, since there was more than one vision about shadows, and shadows meant multiple things.

I really like alderheart. Also twigbranch is a goofy name.
Skyclan was driven out but brought back again so that's cool.

Home sick? This was a perfect way to make my day better. A wonderfully written end to the 5th series. Can’t wait for the next series to come out.

The second half of "A Vision of Shadows" (books #4 through 6) feels weak to me. The first half featured Darktail's rogues as a consistent threat that escalated with each book. But the second half is scattered and haphazard with its plot in comparison. SkyClan's drama is perhaps the most prominent conflict, but even that didn't feel as pressing or urgent as the threat from Darktail.

It was especially difficult for me to feel connected to this book, because it felt as though the time-line was rushed. Twigbranch just became a warrior, but now she's suddenly a mentor and is expected to start a family. Even though they're cats, it felt uncomfortably heteronormative to me. I appreciated how Twigbranch stood up for herself in arguments with Finleap, but it felt predictable that their relationship would undergo some stress, especially considering Finleap uprooted his entire life for Twigbranch at such a young age. I was also unsettled by how lightly the characters treated having kids, as an obligation and a two-month commitment rather than Clan-mates they will be taking care of (and hopefully raising) their entire lives.

Additionally, what happened to characters such as Sparkpelt, who were positioned in the first book as major characters? I would have preferred to see comprehensive character arcs for the cats who started the series rather than complicating matters further by adding even more cats through the introduction of characters such as Shadowkit and Flypaw.

Overall, this series (especially the second half) simultaneously felt as though too much and not enough was happening. I wish that there had been a concentrated plot with more emphasis on a small handful of characters. I understand that it's difficult to juggle so many cats at once, but maybe slowing down the pace and not introducing new characters over halfway through the set of six books would be helpful. I'm much more interested in wrapping up this arc in a satisfying way than setting up the next story-line. In my opinion, "A Vision of Shadows" was entertaining but leaves a lot to be desired.

My son got me into these books when he was a teenager. He's moved on and I'm still addicted. Still, young adult books about wild cats beats romance novels any day.
