Fun quick read. A perfect mix of history and witchy magic! Exactly what I love!
This book has everything but spice!
It's a little bit fantasy, a little bit Sci-Fi. If you like both (like I do) it's a lot of fun!
Conspiracy theories, history, secret societies, and magic all play major roles in this mystery, and the author does a great job at working them all together to make sense.
I especially like that this story features people of color, and asks us to question the history we've all been taught in school.
Sidney, an accomplished historian, suddenly finds herself without a job. Coincidentally, she receives an anonymous invitation to find a lost object (her specialty - finding historic objects) in her hometown, where her grandmother still lives. Throughout the story, Sidney reconnects with people from her past, in more ways than one! As she does, she discovers that not everything is as it seems. She begins to uncover a dangerous political plot, and this puts her life in danger. Yet she still pushes forward!

Meandering and convoluted. This was hard to follow at times and the pacing was off toward the middle. I really enjoyed Esme Addison's other books, but this one just wasn't for me.

Super cute cozy mystery. Got a little slow in the middle, but worth the read as it picks up in the back half. Good palate cleanser for sure!

This novel has a captivating premise that immediately drew me in. I found Sidney (the main protagonist) likeable. However, as the narrative progressed, it becomes entangled in numerous layers of explanation for its central "treasure hunt" resulting in a convoluted plot, like a drawn out history lesson from conspiracy theorists on YouTube.
While I suspended disbelief for much of the narrative, the inclusion of a villain attempting to lure humanity into a virtual reality space felt jarring and unrealistic. The story shines brightest when it delves into the small town’s history, the characters in it, and the intrigue of the actual treasure hunt. Perhaps spreading out the exposition over multiple books would make smoother integration of its complex themes and avoided the feeling of cramming too much into a single novel.
Anyway, if you enjoyed Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code, you might enjoy this one!
Thank you NetGalley and publisher for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.
