This is really really cool. I loved the audiobook, very engaging. The whole story is really ominous and interesting and dark and gorgeous. I really love how sensory experiences are described--the author clearly worked hard and is very skilled at describing scents, sounds, visuals.

I'm not entirely sure how scientifically accurate much of the bee behavior was in this book.

Fun story though.

Update: after learning more about bees. This is all spot on.

What an interesting book! I used to love dystopia before 2017, but it's felt too real in recent years. This was lovely because it hits a lot of the dystopian themes but in the setting of a beehive, which helps it to feel more removed from reality. I would have given it a higher rating except there were a few passages about "dark bees" that felt racial. For example "...it was a fine, dark fellow who stank of it, and he said it made his dronewood hard as the twig we stood on... at least I think that's what he said, in his thick and foreign tongue." Yikes.

This book was SO GOOD and especially interesting for me to read as an entomology student! Strangely human for a story about bees, this is at its core about the love between a mother and her daughter.
