Such a brilliantly quirky and bittersweet coming of age story! Loved all of the main characters.

Well, crotchety little teenage narrator, 18 pages was all I could take.

Excellent. I loved the character development. I will miss both of the main characters for quite some time.

I thought I was going to hate this book and I ended up flying through it. It really was horrifying in a lot of ways, but the ending was fantastic. Worth the ride, for sure.

Marnie and Nelly are the neglected children of Izzy McDonald and Eugene Doyle. When the two girls find their parents dead (Gene was suffocated with a pillow and Izzy had hung herself) they take matters into their own hands, burying their bodies in shallow graves in the backyard garden, and telling friends that their parents have gone traveling to Turkey. Because the parents are frequently absent, their lie is easy to believe. The girls know that if social services finds out they are alone they will be forced into foster care and separated, a fate unacceptable to these sisters who have only ever known each other as family. The next-door neighbor, Lennie, notices the girls' parents have been absent for longer than usual and decides to help them out. He's always disliked Nelly and Marnie's drugged out and immature parents. The book follows the girls' ordeal and what happens while they are trying to keep their secret, stay together, and cope with all they have been through in their young lives.

Everyone at work was raving about this book so I thought I should give it a go. I loved it. This book follows 2 sisters Marnie and her younger sister Nelly. The Stories starts off when Marnie buries her parents in the backyard. Fantastic, good story line. could not put the book down!
