An honest look at finding God

This memoir is full of honest reflections on the choices and changes that lead us to a faith practice. While specifically about Judaism Danya covers teachers of many faiths and I believe the truth she finds can be found in different ways in many faith traditions. Worth a read if you are considering a faith tradition or are looking to deepen your current practice.

The story starts off slow but builds nicely. I don't think it will be very interesting to people who aren't already on some sort of spiritual Jewish path. But I enjoyed the straightforward, clear writing. Rabbi Ruttenberg has some important things to say about spirituality and politics - having experiences of breaking down the barriers between self and other should make certain politics easier and harder. I've read a few spirituality stories from Buddhists so it was nice to have a Jewish perspective too.

Powerful stories and I enjoyed her writing style. I recognized a lot of my struggles in her struggles. I loved reading about San Francisco when she was here in her early 20s. I was delighted by how often I read something that I have felt exactly myself. It was comforting to hear about her spiritual journey and it felt like someone understood mine.

Could have been way shorter. Very long winded.

Although I'm not Jewish and don't intend to convert, there was still plenty to take away from this book. I've been following Rabbi Ruttenberg's short-form content through Twitter and email for a while now and always learned a lot from it, and this was no different.

However, for some reason I just really struggled to get through it! The content was interesting - I just couldn't get into the writing, which was a shame because as I said, I did learn a lot from reading it.

I was slow starting it, but then I picked it up and didn't want to put it down. I was a bit expecting more of a Road to Damascus moment, but I'm actually glad that it's a slow burn romance (pardon my analogy).

It should not surprise you to know that I cried about this book both on the subway and at my desk.
