I really liked the writing and the premise of this book, but I was left with far too many "huh?" moments. It felt like maybe the editing left some key details out? Or left some in that should have gone? I was immersed in this world but just couldnt figure out the ending - or seem to care much about it? I really wanted to like this book more.

I tried so hard to like this book and the premise was so good but it just didn’t hit. The “rich girl searching for justice” felt very unrealistic. Dropping the name of the most notorious gangster at multiple high society parties and walking out of those parties alive in prohibition era Chicago is just not a reality.

The dialogue also felt very forced and sophomoric… all in all, I DNFd this at 50% and wouldn’t recommend.

[2.5] Silly coded fr fr. I had to laugh at the final reveal because truly because it made the plot holes even more huh??? There is unreliable narration/plot twists and then there is just confusing writing. Also, characterization in this book is soo weird at time to get social commentary across. The whole main love story really was me being like a Tomas stan and then being absolutely right because Jay was a little weirdo whose such a cringefail criminal mastermind in my opinion. Nelly pissed me off so bad for 90% of the book like she's just the picture of stupidity which makes her perfect for her man whose not her man Jay whose equally dumb af. She gets innocent folks murdered and he's a murderer slayyyyy. I'm also so confused at crime attribution in this book like which crimes were mob and which are Jay (maybe that's the point but it is soooo dumb since if you even think for 2 minutes, it starts to makes little sense).

I really liked the book but I HATED the ending....

Loved it. Although some things felt known from the beginning, the ending still managed to surprise me and the book kept me interested from cover to cover.
The cast of characters felt varied and nuanced in a way that fit with the historical period, and I loved the secondary characters as much as the protagonists. Great book, will probably read it again.
