Lovely. Self-indulgent escapism. Nora Ephron-ish vibes.

This was adorable! I loved the publishing career Lanie had and the story within a story. The romance within a romance was very cute and something I haven't read before. I was honestly holding my breath for the ending I wanted, if it had gone any other way, I would have been disappointed, but Lauren Kate knows how to give her readers what they want! Lauren Kate leads you right up to the edge and catches you with a warm hug. I had tears in my eyes from the sweetness of the love story. Definitely recommend to romance readers - 4.5 stars but rounding up since there are no half star options.

Thank you NetGalley and GP Putnam's Sons for allowing me access to this story.

Possible spoiler:

This is a lovely rom-com within publishing, something I've been enjoying lately. This one is nice, no spice, feels less forced than some (also good). But why am I writing this review?? Bc I totally want to read the novel within the novel!!

this main character is so hateable and I felt like everyone in this book was overly dramatic.

Spoilers below I guess I’m not sure with romance what’s a spoiler half the time

Our main character is engaged for nearly half the book and really just was a horrible human in my opinion. She had all these plans with her fiancé and then seemed to be mad at him for expecting that they keep going with their plans. They’re supposed to be planning a wedding and she said she’s moving to DC to be with him once they get married yet she accepts a major job offer in NYC without even a thought of consulting him and then gets mad he’s not jumping for joy congratulating her. She treats him like an inanimate object that she has picked solely because she checks off boxes on a list. When he tells her he’s a human being that has more to him than her list of things she wants in a man she doesn’t even take him seriously.
She doubts her love for him so quickly just by finding out that the MMC/fav author is a man. She has this realization that if the author isn’t who she assumed he was then maybe she actually doesn’t love her fiancé because her list she created bc of one of the MMC’s books can’t be trusted. Seriously????
additionally, she was really horrible to the MMC when she figured out that he’s actually a man. She also was just stupid about it? The day they met face to face the MMC made a direct reference to their email exchange from earlier that day and she still kept insisting he couldn’t be at a romance book event unless he was press or looking to get laid by his wife/girlfriend.
She really sucks as a person for all of this.

On top of this we got a “I let go of the breath I didn’t realize I was holding” and didn’t even get to see the press event that was being discussed for the last 20% of the book. It ended right before it like it wasn’t being built up as such a big deal!! I actually wanted a page or two on how it went. Easily could’ve been an epilogue moment.

Premise is cute but the whole plot was executed poorly. It wants to be an enemies to lovers and the second time they meet Lanie is internally ranting about what a jerk he was at their first meeting, but he wasn't. If anything she was the one being a jerk for the first part of the book.
Also her breaking up with her boyfriend was all so spur of the moment. Just *poof* single and perfectly fine after breaking off an engagement.
Also she got a manuscript, read it, edited it and sent it off for ARCS all in a single day. I don't think that is how editing works at all.
I think it needed to be longer to flesh out a bunch of things but instead it all just felt surface level and a bit of a mess.

If this book had smut it would be nearly perfect.
