A always wonder just how much baggage I'm bringing to these books, reading them so long after I first heard of them, long after I got to know most of the main characters, because reading a book for the first time having already formed such solid opinions is a very different experience from coming at it fresh. Not only that, but I come into it with expectations. In the case of the first Watch book, I think that worked in its favour; in the case of this one, it might have worked against it. Which isn't to say that it's not a good book that had moments of genius, because it's Pratchett, but I didn't love it like I wanted to.

Even better than [book: Guards! Guards], I loved so much about this. Loved Vimes, loved Carrot, loved Cuddy and Detritus, loved Angua, loved Vetinari (especially his surprise and horror at getting shot, and the scene at the end with Carrot). I guess my review, if it can be called that, is basically <3 .

Everything you love from Guards! Guards! is back and has evolved along with Pratchett’s writing. Truly firing on all cylinders.
