I get the feeling I'm probably going to rate most of the series 4 stars.
Again, legally-an-adult me noticed more flaws than not-legally-an-adult me did. When it brushes up against social issues its, well, a very 2006 approach. Honestly though, the gender stuff could have been handled way worse considering a plot point was a guy passing himself off as a 'lady cyclops' by wearing a wedding dress. There was surprisingly few jokes about it, or maybe I just missed most of them because I don't consider a guy in a dress to be an inherently funny thing. There was also a fair amount of ableism happening with Tyson*, Percy's brother, but it's sadly an amount of ableism that's actually realistic, and one of Percy's big moments of growth was realising he was kind of being a dick to Tyson. I mean, a major theme of Percy Jackson is overcoming internalised and externalised ableism, considering basically all the characters are neurodivergent. So I guess I'm not going to be too hard on it, especially since 2006.
Also again, wasn't as funny as it was when I was in the intended age range, but I still found all the worldbuilding interesting and, honestly, Percy Jackson as a character is such a good protagonist. All the characters add something to the story. Even if they make me smack my head on the wall sometimes because, nit pick time, you're telling me Annabeth didn't give Percy her knife when they went via the sirens and she got him to tie her up??? Come on, I can believe Percy didn't think of it but Annabeth???? Also, holy shit Clarisse, I know you have a tough girl image to uphold but please, I beg you, learn when to shut the fuck up.
So yeah. 4/5.
*By the way, Tyson is hands down the sweetest character in this series and I would die for him.

While this isn't a bad book by any stretch the plot is a bit watery (heh get it) for my liking. It just feels very throw away compared to the other installments despite the ending being important for the overall story arc throughout the series at large. Solid read not my fav.

I really really enjoyed this. I had forgotten some of the details so it was nice rediscovering all the little surprises along the way. I’m ‘officially’ giving it the same rating as the first book but I liked this one a lot more, just don’t think it is quite a perfect score. I wish we could do half scores on goodreads. I loved percy’s narrating voice and I’m so happy seeing the subtle start to their relationship.
