A solid story.
However, in an attempt to merge romance and suspense both of these seem to suffer. The chemistry between the main characters isn't right and the mystery is formulaic.

This is surprisingly complex for a "standard" thrilling/romance. It was entertaining enough though not great literature. This is the second time I've read this book, but it will probably be the last, unless I forget that I read it (again).

I would recommend if you come across it, are not ready to give a book your full attention, or otherwise don't have anything else to read.

I have to admit that I was disappointed in this book. I loved all of the Donovan "jewel stories" and hoped this would be similar but unfortunately, not quite. It turned out to be one of those books that wasn't bad enough to stop reading (it had a good plot line & just enough mystery to keep you wanting to know who the baddie was) but not good enough to be happy that you finished it. While I love learning something new about the main topics (sapphires & the jewelry industry, in this case) there was just too much technical information shared. Between the tutorials and all the characters that you had to keep track of, it got really confusing. One other observation - despite that I personally am fond of, and have use for, coffee & hair clips, I lost count of how many times they were brought up in an overwhelming way in the story. If I start noticing and dreading reading about character details, they're in there too much! I love this author but if you want to read a book with this subject, I highly recommend you read Amber Beach instead.

Fast-paced read, fun too, though the ending was meh.

Elizabeth Lowell has a habit of writing about jewels. In this eBook, Kate Chandler is a skilled cutter, shaping a unique set of sapphires that end up costing her brother his life. Kate is strong, and a bit pushy, just how I like my modern heroines. She's determined to get to the bottom of the mystery of the sapphires and her brother, with or without the FBI. While she's taking her search to the next level, we encounter the hero. Sam isn't your typical hero. He's a bit rough around the edges, an insightful investigator, but lousy at office politics. It's rare that our perfect hero is threatened with career suicide in Fargo!

Lowell does an excellent job fleshing out FBI office politics, and the inner-workings of the gem trade, to the detriment of her main characters's fledgling romance. I suspect that Lowell is trying to go more mainstream with her suspense novels, so the romantic heat is more physical attraction than emotional connection. But those looking for sexual tension will be satisfied with Kate's and Sam's inner longings.

A worthy suspense, but missing a bit of the romance for romantic suspense.

Nagyon sokáig tartott elolvasni ezt a regényt, pedig elvileg pörgős-izgalmas kriminek kellett volna lennie, de egyszerűen unalmas volt és érdektelen.
