Listened to the audiobook of this - and the narrator did an amazing job of capturing the unhinged behavior of the main character. I found its themes to be similar to Disorientation. It sparks an interesting discussion about voices of AAPI and POC, specifically in the literary realm.

Enjoyed the deep conversations on authors (specifically white) writing on a culture different from their own and trying to show themselves as an expert on the topic. The topic of plagiarism and theft of work was an interesting topic to touch on.

A scathing indictment of the publishing industry, full of the least likable characters I’ve ever read. My favorite part was the examination of jealousy in the first chapter. Very validating due to my pregnancy loss journey.

hmm this is not exactly what i was expecting. the situation and characters really felt like caricatures, which i assume (because Kuang is such a phenomenal writer) was done on purpose but i think it was a little too much so. i think that just isn’t my style but the underlying themes were important

Yeah this protagonist is super annoying. But that’s the whole point. This is such a deep novel on so many different levels and it brings up so many different excellent points. I’m really glad it’s getting the recognition it deserves because these are conversation topics that we really need to cover. Highly recommend
