Genre: High fantasy
Setting: South America
Characters: No one is white, few are straight, all are complex.
World-building: Well done, and without long exposition about it.
Bonus: Kick-ass warrior women! Sweet romantic subplots! Lots of Spanish mixed into conversation! Monsters and quests!

I'm kicking myself for starting to read a trilogy before it's fully published, because now I will pine incessantly for the next installment.

I liked this book. I think it was a solid sequel, and I'm excited to read the next book in this series.

I thought the characters were good, and I liked how Nova has grown and evolved. I liked the relationships and I'm curious to see how they develop. I think there's a good chance of a love triangle and I'm curious how Hernandez will write that. I'm always iffy on love triangles or love shapes. So far for this one, I don't have a big preference.

I struggled with the pacing. Overall, it was fine. I thought there were a lot of moments that were more of a "show" than a "tell." But for those moments to be "shown" would have changed the pacing and made the book longer. The writing style kept me interested and engaged. I love the bits of Spanish throughout, and I loved the glossary in the back. The plot was cute. I liked that there were two separate yet connected plots between "now" and "then."

This was a lot more heavy handed than the first book. More world descriptions this time around in addition to other POVā€™s besides Nova/Nessa. I feel like because this felt so bogged down - I didnā€™t appreciate the mini plot twist that happens. This is a book you canā€™t take long breaks from otherwise youā€™ll forget a lot quickly. Iā€™m hoping the third book is less pages and not feel as dense.

This is truly a case of you have to get past book 1. Book 2 was so much better! The pacing issues were resolved and it wove the two timeline stories together so well. It took me a little while to trust the writing after book 1 but I really got into it and I canā€™t wait for book 3. Jessā€™s story was so enjoyable even if I guess who she was right away. I am so curious to see the love triangle of Nova/Dami/Ax sort itself out. Maybe weā€™ll even get a poly situation. Natalia didnā€™t hold back with heartbreaking losses in this one though and I may not forgive her for some characters. This was a great building book in the series with classic questing elements without feeling too tromping through the forest the whole time.

Our intrepid trio continues on to try to find the Unnamed Prince, gaining unlikely allies on the way, and overcoming new obstacles. Old friends are met, and new enemies are encountered and I liked this very much.
This series just feels like a delightfully light fantasy series, I can shut off my brain and just enjoy the book. It almost reminds me of listening to someone tell me a story.
We get to see a bit of romance in this, I won't spoil anything, but it was very sweet and I liked the inclusion of it.
This book was a delightful palate cleanser that got me out of a funk, and for that I am so grateful.
If you are looking for shorter diverse fantasy books to read, give this one a go!
I very much love this cover as well, it's very soft and I like the symbolism.

The adventure continues with book 2 of the Flowers of Prophecy series, The Follower of Flowers. In this book, we are given 3 POVs which 1 is a new character that we are being introduced to during the book. Even though, this is not a character we know, Nataliaā€™s writing allows for the story to be weaved into the other POVs without causing confusion. This book continues to be filled with adventure, magic, and friendships. The portrayal of friendships and the loyalty that comes when friends become family has been my favorite thus far! Nataliaā€™s writing has made it to that these friendships become part of the reader. So much, so that the last 10 chapters of this book had me on an emotional roller coaster! So many happy moments, yet we just had to have devastating momentsšŸ˜ I had to remember that this journey to fulfill the prophecy is dangerous for any involved.

So many favorite quotes, but these are from some of my favorite scenes:

šŸŒø ā€œYouā€™re her, arenā€™t you? Youā€™re the Name-Bearer.ā€
šŸŒø ā€œIts only because they poison your mind against men at the Temple..ā€
šŸŒø ā€œIā€™ve never been enough for either side.ā€
šŸŒø Itā€™s what best friends do.ā€

šŸ’A huge thank you to @nataliahernadezauthor for sending me this E-ARC, it in no way influences my review. The Follower of Flowers will be out on June 27, 2023, so preorder NOW!
