Second of series of three.
Even though this is a teen/young adult novel, it has beautiful imagery, a fun and thoughtful story, lovely character development, and most importantly an opulent depiction of panpsychism. Highly recommend for those broadening their knowledge on philosophical perspectives, trying to see the world more creatively, or want to go on a colorful otherworldly adventure. A poignant read as people are learning to waste less and appreciate what they have, and a lovely parallel to Marie Kondo's teaching as if every item has a bit of life. That's not necessarily the point of the story but definitely can ease the reader into a conservationist mindset.

(Same review for all three books)

The last line in one of the final chapters had me in tears, it was the first time a book has made me feel real grief at a character's death and I may have still been crying when I went to bed. This was a really good book and I can't wait to start the final one.

This continues to be an interesting and enjoyable series, but moving the focus from Lyra to Will is unfortunate. Will just doesn't have the likability and charisma of Lyra, and his storyline is too opaque at this point in the series to be very intriguing. The addition of characters like Dr. Malone don't add a lot, because their characters are underdeveloped and the new adults in particular are more like caricatures (and not very intelligent ones), especially compared to morally complex adults like Mrs. Coulter introduced in book 1. I'm also not a fan of when magic is explained pseudo-scientifically, or when science becomes hand-wavy magic, and the introduction of "our world" science was irritating.

My questions from book 1 (see that review) have not yet been answered, and I'm doubting that they will be.
