Belle believes that Dylan is the one that she'll marry, but one day, Dylan tells her that he is gay. Belle wonders where does this leave her. Dylan and her have been best friends since they were little in their little town in Maine. Since they started dating, Belle has been known as Dylan's girlfriend or the other half of their couple hood.
Belle and her other best friend, Emily decide that she can only have a week to cry, because she doesn't want to become like Mallory. As the week goes on, Belle finds a possible relationship in a guy that she least suspects and it turns out that he has liked for her for a long time. Bella also finds that having a gay ex-boyfriend isn't so so easy. She starts to find that both her and Dylan are getting harassed. This story is original and amazing.

If you haven't read this, go pick this up and get somewhere comfortable. It is a fairly short, yet amazing read. The characters are really amazing and well developed. I could relate to them. This is amazing for a debut novel and I need to get Carrie Jones' other books, as soon as possible. If you like Audrey, Wait! by Robin Benway, you will probably like this and vice versa. The characters are both getting attention for past relationships and it has similar humor.

Soooo terribly written that I think I would rather roll down a hill of razors into a lake of lemon juice than finish reading this book. Yea, that bad.

Tips on Having a Gay (ex) Boyfriend by Carrie Jones follows a week in Belle's life as she recovers from the news that her boyfriend, Dylan, is gay.

Belle's transition from sadness, anger to reluctant acceptance relies heavily on music. The book is written in diary form. It's written in a raw, emotional and sometimes rambling fashion.

There's also a lot of repetition. Dylan, the ex, does follow a few stereotypes but he has enough non-stereotype aspects to his personality that I let the other parts slide. Gay men are as diverse a group as any other and some of them do fall into the stereotypes either by accident or by choice.

Ultimately kind of a happy-go-lucky YA romance which escapes the typical shallowness of that genre by actually saying some interesting things about sexuality and identity and maturity. Which is not to say that it doesn't sometimes take itself too seriously. But it has lists, and I'm a sucker for lists.

In the end, it reminded me a lot of This is All, because of the lists and the characters who are incredibly mature and able to recognize when they're succumbing to teenagey melodrama/angst. Also, I kept wavering between despising and enjoying the book. But whereas I ultimately liked This is All, Tips on Having a Gay (ex) Boyfriend fell on the didn't-quite-like side of the love-hate spectrum.

The authorial voice is quirky and the characters mostly believable. A very enjoyable book that does tip over into caricature here and there but mostly does a remarkable job of capturing the bewilderment and magic of young love.
