Magical realism will never be for me so I really struggled to get through this book. I liked Nicholas and Collins and was very ambivalent to all other characters. I guessed one of the twists quite early. But for the most part, I just really struggled to care about any of this book. I felt like the miscommunication/lack of communication trope was forced and excessive and had very Dumbledore vibes. Really just don't tell the readers what is happening so you can prolong the *mystery*. Some cool Mexican Gothic vibes with the Library and uncle grandpa Dick, but overall this book fell flat for me. 3.4
