Paige Holden moved to Baltimore to escape a personal tragedy . She works at a PI agency with Clay Maynard and takes a pro bono case where the family insists that the convicted murderer is innocent . Soon after the murderer's wife is shot in front of her but gives Paige evidence of her husband's innocence before her death.Paige decides to take to information to the State Attorneys office Grayson Smith who though suspicious decides to take another look at the evidence. But things start heating up when another attempt is made at Paige's life and somebody would do anything to stop the investigation.

This is a great romantic suspense book by Karen Rose.Lots of well developed characters and different storylines that come together at the end. An enjoyable read but maybe a few chapters too long
dark mysterious tense medium-paced

I listened to the audiobook via Libby and the narrator did a good job.

No boring page on this book! I love it!

This was one of the better books in this series - both Paige and Greyson were smart and brave. They made a lot of sense together! The mystery was pretty elaborate and dark as per usual.

This book was dreadfully longgg. I can't stand this mixture of romance and thriller book in one.
Other things that I disliked:
- That husband of Adele being a complete prick to her about thinking she's cheating on him. She says that she thinks someone is trying to kill her and he just makes it all about how he thinks she's cheating. "Seems that if someone's stalking you, you caught their eye somehow". Victim blaming asshole.
- Graysons' mother and her only concern after seeing him on tv saving Paige is all about when she's going to meet this girl. WTF
- The author explains that Delgado's wife kicks him out because she thinks he lied and then in the next paragraph the wife is pleading for him not to leave
- Delgado agrees to an on air interview in his neighbourhood, the same neighbourhood he's trying to escape from, incognito

So, too many plot holes, too many damn characters to try to remember, and too freaking long. why did i bother finishing it?? i don't think i'll bother with any of her other books.
adventurous emotional medium-paced

Badasses who get scared. Dogs and guns and cops!

Shitty child molesters and their murdering enablers. Blackmail. Harm of children.

The storytelling in this second novel of Karen Rose’s Baltimore series is absolutely masterful. Not only does she weave in characters from the previous novel (not to mention previous series), but she also introduces a whole new cast of characters. There are so many that it becomes hard to keep them straight, but I suspect that is why she is so good at fooling the reader with the “whodunit” aspect of the story. Honestly, I don’t know how she does it. She’s gotta have like 17 murder boards strung about her house, lol.

The inciting incident of this story occurs when a decades-long conspiracy literally crashes into Paige Holden—a PI-in-training who had just moved from Minneapolis to Baltimore. A recently acquired client, wounded from gunshots, hands Paige a piece of evidence exonerating her husband of a murder he’d been convinced of several years ago. Eventually, Paige ends up crossing paths with the love interest in the story, Grayson Smith, who happens to be the district attorney responsible for prosecuting her client’s husband. Together, the two join forces to unravel the cover-up and seek justice, not only the man who’d been falsely convicted, but also for a long list of victims they would eventually discover had also been denied justice.

What I love most about this story—in addition to the great cast of characters, suspenseful plot, and cleverly crafted mystery—is the theme moral complexity proposed in many of the situations faced by the characters. For example, they’re willing to risk the lives of other children in order to protect their own. The way people justify their actions makes you think about what you would do if you were in their situation. Even the “bad guys” have their reasons—if not “good” reasons, at least understandable ones.

Loved this book and can’t wait to start the next one!

Loved seeing some of the same characters. When is she going to tackle Stevie and Clay? And maybe introduce Thorne to Dr. Burke? The possibilities are endless.

Oh dear. Maybe this was one of those books that you either get or don't. Sure if I actually cared about any of the characters I might have something better to say about this novel.

The novel begins clumisily, with our heroine receiving a phone call from her business partner to fill out her back-story ("Hey lady just calling to talk about the past few significant events of your life") The putziness continues as our main lady Paige can't work out whether she is a black-belt, knife and gun toting bad-ass or a simpering idiot who only needs to get laid to feel better. Her counterpart Grayson keeps his personality in his muscles, although apparently he has a dark secret that could ruin everything (or at least stop him getting laid) I struggled to suspend my disbelief as you'd have to be literarily impaired not to understand they were destined for each other.

The sinister plot fails to hold interest, I found myself becoming more attached to Silas, a decent cop manipulated into breaking bad, but got barely the amount of page-time the sex-scenes did.

To be fair the rompy pompy scenes are the best writing in the piece. Has this author heard of pacing? suspense? how about cutting your terrible novel in half to at least reduce the pain of having to read through the whole thing.

Yes maybe the only reason I bothered finishing this that writing a vicious review without honestly getting through the whole thing seemed immoral somehow. Then again the 10 bucks got paid either way so whatever.

This book wasn't the best Karen Rose that I have read but it was still interesting, though I feel it could have been a bit shorter without having a detrimental effect on the plot or characters. I didn't warm to either Grayson or Paige as much as some of the other Rose creations and if I'm honest their relationship was a bit predictable and boring.
