ok yes really enjoyed this (is enjoyed the right word? i was immersed and i really enjoyed being immersed, even if i didn’t like what i was being immersed in). read it at a very powerful time & think that was important. my pet peeve atm is books that market themselves as one thing and aren’t - i don’t think this is a love story.

Pensé que iba a ser demasiado pretencioso y woke para mi, pero me gustó bastante. Hay que ir a fondo con revista sudestada

In this wonderfully crafted powerful novella, the author, through our main characters, speaks his mind about black experiences. We see our main characters bond over their shared black experiences growing up. While family, love and art are in the heart of the story, it dives deep into the discussion of inhumane treatment and violence black folks face every day, and the constant fear that most people live with. So much so that the trauma lingers on, impacting them mentally and emotionally, disrupting their normal lives. Our guy struggles with his relationship and is incapable of being vulnerable to his love. Everyday feels like a battle to survive and he, like many other black people, is pained by the fact that his mother, his love and he himself pray that that day isn’t his last.
A short but slow read.
