I wondered how Meyer would keep perfect Edward interesting. Maybe she thought of that too. And her solution was to get rid of him for over half the book. Smart move, in my opinion. Having him leave for noble purposes wasn't exactly original, but at least we got to meet Jacob Black, who becomes Bella's best friend. He's more human, despite becoming a werewolf, which makes him more likable than Edward in a lot of ways. If you're going to have a love triangle, it's imperative to have a romantic rival who can actually compete.
The most annoying thing was how slow on the uptake Bella could be. First, she actually believed Edward had stopped loving her, which made no sense. Then she took eons to figure out the werewolf bit. It's no fun to be ten steps ahead of the narrator. I also don't think Bella's dependence on Edward and Jacob sends a healthy message to girls. Hopefully readers know not to take these fantasies too seriously.

I gave 2 stars instead of 3 just because of the drag in the initial part of the story. The part that includes vampires and werewolves was interesting. I guess i enjoy more fantasy drama. Plain teen romance tends to bore me. I hated the story till Edward appeared in the middle. Of course i liked Jacob and i think Bella was reckless and selfish with Jacob's heart but Jacob never felt right for Bella. The story was too casual. I felt the same for the first book too. I'd expect more twists and turns though this story was boring even for a simple feel good book. The second half was good.
