This was the first Henty novel I read, but for the last several years my family has LOVED Heirloom Audio’s Henty dramatizations. Having listened to the audio dramas first and then reading the book, I was majorly disappointed.

If the character names hadn’t been the same, beyond the first couple of chapters I would have never recognised the two versions as the same story. And…to be honest, I enjoyed the dramatization more.

The hardest pill to swallow was the my favourite character from the audio drama (Harold) wasn’t even in the book! By the end, I was pretty devastated.

IF I had read this book without knowing about the audio drama, I probably would have enjoyed it more. But alas…

All that to say, the book was fine. Is Henty my favourite author? No, but I felt I owed him a chance. Will I continue to listen to the Heirloom Audio dramas? Absolutely!

I was thinking about reading In Freedom’s Cause but decided against it. I don’t want to get disappointed again. ;)

Part of my lack of enthusiasm for this book is probably due to the audiobook narrator, who managed to make even the exciting bits sound terribly dull, and who dragged out the last couple words of his sentences in an oddddd fashiooon. But the story itself lost me at points, especially since the book alternated between following one main character's story and going off on long summaries of historical events. Good historical fiction makes you feel as though you were present, not as though you're sitting through a lecture of the most significant events of the time period.

I don't usually rate books two stars. I usually like Henty, too. But I just couldn't stand this one. I hate character stereotypes and... this book is full of them. Gah. 'Gary Stus' everywhere. Help me.
The historical content was ok, but somewhat overwhelming considering this was supposed to be fiction.
