Mix of three stories all with their own merits and problems. Most fail in the way they end, just a confusing abrupt ending. Stories were fine.

This was a delightful little collection about haunted houses, but "The Ancestors" stole the show. I loved that one so much that the other two stories didn't feel as hard-hitting by comparison.

Adam Nevill is fantastic at omitting just enough detail about the monsters that your brain has to fill in the blanks. Done well - as it was in all three stories in this collection - that makes things so much scarier.

I've been meaning to check out the author's work for a while, and where better to start than some of his short stories?

The second story was my favourite from the lot I think. The first lacked something in pacing but I also really enjoyed. The third and final story was the least scary. It might have also been longer or slower, seeing as not much happened at the beginning.

Will definitely be picking up more from the author!

I find it rather surprising that I experienced a sense of boredom while reading a book of such length. Regrettably, I must admit that I don't even recall the plot of the first story, as it failed to make a lasting impression on me. Moreover, the final story proved to be a tedious endeavor, seemingly attempting to evoke a melancholic and poetic essence, but, unfortunately, it fell short of its intended impact. The only respite within the collection was found in the second story, which managed to capture and maintain a fraction of my attention...
