This book made me laugh, cry, and challenge my own thoughts and beliefs. At the beginning and middle of the book, it was a little difficult to like the characters, but by the end, they all had grown in ways that made me appreciate their differences. Love the insight into the world of Yin from Kwan, and the differences in spirituality and culture and how it affects their lives and relationships

I read this one for a book group, and it started off so slow that I thought I was going to have to do some major skimming to get through it. It picked up around page 70 or so, though, and from there I really enjoyed it. I was very interested to see where the story would go, and how things would end up. I can't say I loved the ending, but it wasn't horrible.

I am a fan of Amy Tan's but this may be her "oddest" premise, involving reincarnation and a double story line. Ultimately it's about belief, loyalty, love and hope. But it did not capture me as her other works have done.
