As a 30 year old spinster, Sesily has embraced the freedom and life she has created for herself. Luring men into the shadows to draw out their deepest and darkest secrets all while no one suspects a thing. That is until Caleb Calhoun returns from Boston and tries to tell himself that he’s still not caught up on his best friends’ sister. Until Sesily makes it his business to be all over her secrets. Someone has to keep Sesily away from trouble and it might as well be him but will Sesily accept that and potentially giving up the freedoms she’s comfortable in?

It has been a long time since I randomly picked a book to read but this one caught my eye from the synopsis alone and I’m so glad it didn’t disappoint. I absolutely loved Sesily and Caleb’s story - so many great one liners and I love Sesily’s wit and sarcasm.  If you’re looking for a great historical fiction with some humor and knot in stomach scenes, look no further. The hijinks of Sesily and her friends are fantastic and I love that a band of women are keeping London on their toes.

Favorite quotes - “Don’t tempt me with a delicious challenge.” & “I would walk into fire if it meant seeing you one last time. And I would not hesitate.”

Wanted so badly to like this, since the concept is pretty great, and I'm a big fan of Sarah MacLean. However, if there's one thing I hate, it's when the brooding male love interest is paired with a firey woman who will not take no for an answer and he ends up trying to fall on his sword to "protect her". It's sadly predictable for a book written in 2020, and I personally felt so indifferent to their relationship I was practically bored and even decent banter couldn't save it.

This is my first historical romance read, and I honestly enjoyed it more than I thought I would. If you like stories of women taking down men who go unpunished for their crimes and abuse, you’ll likely enjoy this read! It wasn’t 5 stars for me because while this is the first book in the “hell’s belles” series, there is a lot of focus on Sera and Mal’s characters and relationship, and having not read that book from a separate series I felt like I was missing vital information about the relationship between Sera and this book’s hero, Caleb. That could be viewed as my fault for not researching before picking out this book, but I thought I’d be good to dive in since this is a separate series. There was a learning curve for me in reading historical for the first time, and having this extra level of confusion just made some parts of the book seem slow and unnecessary. But still, a GREAT read. And while I don’t know if I’ll go back and read books from that other series, I’ll definitely continue the Hell’s Belle’s series.
