This short story was ok. I generally don't enjoy short stories that much, but I have been wanting to read Alice Hoffman for a while, but had found her standard length novels a bit hard to absorb.

The quality of writing is top notch and you can't fault that. I was disappointed there wasn't really any magical realism or magic as I thought that was something Hoffman was known for...unless the cakes in the story helped a bit...

It is the tale of two sisters and their relationship and grief. It does contain themes of books and nature, too. I didn't really like that Isabel was made out to be all bad at first. It was alright for a short story though and despite my criticisms, is perhaps one of the better short stories I have read overall. It is a standalone so doesn't leave you hanging.

A rather treacly short story of estranged sisters who come together when one needs help. Good descriptions of Maine scenery. A lovable dog. An irascible girl. A ferry. A short story.
