Incredible.

Well, I’m crying.

This third book was AMAZING. First off, I need to talk about the romance because OH BOY if the second one made me curious about our two main characters, in this one I was INVESTED. I'm not usually a big fan of the young main female character and hundred years old dude dynamic but somehow Katherine Arden got me with these two. The TENSION, the YEARNING, the DESPAIR. It was sooooo good!! I loved that Vasya was having none of Morozko's bullshit and vice-versa and I thought that the balance of power between them was explored in a very interesting way. Sometimes with this trope the female character is undermined or just naive and doesn't put the older man in his place but Vasya did. not. let. him. play. The push and pull was incredibly well done.

Similarly to the second book, the plot in this one was NO JOKE. It was action-packed, fast paced and made me gasp multiple times. There were so many plot twists and political backstabbing, which I'm always down for. I loved the dynamics between all the characters and how they kept on evolving, sometimes in ways that really surprised me but were incredibly satisfying. Vasya gets more and more complex and morally grey in every installment and I LOVED the exploration of her morality in this third book. I also loved that we never lose the rich atmosphere the first book sets up and it just gets darker and darker as we move forward in the story. There's also a scene towards the end that made me cry like a fucking baby, so there's that lol

This series is honestly one that I will recommend for a very long time and maybe also reread one day, because I just loved so many things about it. The exploration of gender expectation, the magic and spooky/enchanting creatures, the folklore and history seeped into it; there are just so many good things to love. It truly is historical fantasy at its best.

Definitely stuck the landing on this one.
It took me awhile to get through but it was worth it. There's a lot to digest.
