Seldom have I been so sad for a book to end. Listened to book narrated by Elvis himself. Loved hearing each referenced song play in my head. Would have enjoyed a companion compilation. A must read for any fan of Elvis, his contemporaries and catalog of musical inspiration.

Strongly recommend. I’m not really a fan, but I loved reading about his life.

I'm a huge Elvis Costello fan so of course I found this book fascinating. Sometimes, when he details the circumstances under which he wrote his songs, it felt like it was made just for huge fans like me. But overall it's a meditation on family, and Elvis opens up and shares the darker side of his past. It's wonderful to see an artist this free of artifice. Still at times it rambles and has boring bits.

I'm going to have to put this on hold for a bit. It's LONG and intimidating and not written . . . linearly? But I will try to get back to it, I swear.

His lyrics took hold of me when I was 17 years old and 40 years later I still can't let go. Wonderful memoir of my all time favorite songwriter.

Lots of anecdotes from his rich and varied career but it became bit of a slog, after a while. Some very poignant writing on his dad, but filled with stories about hanging out with famous people, many of which finish with “and then I went off to Paris to support Bob Dylan”.
