Tayari Jones has crafted a novel where every sentence feels intentional. Silver Sparrow packs a hell of a punch and, as a marker of its quality, makes me want to talk about it with everyone that I know. One thing I've had issue with in the past with this author is the abruptness of her endings, hence why I've knocked off a star - but I do feel as though the abruptness and lack of closure is as intentional as every other moment in the book. It might not be the ending I want to happen, but that's the point - we rarely get those in life anyway.

From the first lines of Silver Sparrow, we are transfixed by the story Tayari Jones is about to weave. But what isn't apparent yet is how much light Jones shines on the beauty and intrigue of messy lives.

We are introduced to a family that is not your average one—by any stretch of the imagination. A wife and her daughter know nothing about their patriarch's second family, but the other wife and daughter do. The tension that builds with this type of plot is dripped all over the novel. Jones' prose is smart, concise, and filled with emotion that jumps off the page. An immediate favorite.
