A brilliant depiction of one person's journey to independence. Navigating through family, romantic relationships, writing, passion, and housing, Cisneros opens readers up to her life in a way that inspires confidence, community, and joy. I found this book while struggling with my own journey to independence, and it was a welcome friend and guide.

The chapter on book censorship in particular really spoke to me as a librarian. A beautiful book, and now I have 5000 other things to research from indigenous Mexican culture, and feel an overwhelming need to paint something Maya blue.
