Conn memang seorang pencuri, gembel dan pengecut, tapi dia bukan seorang pembohong. Setidaknya setelah Magister Nevery mengangkatnya menjadi calon murid sihir.

3.5/5

4.5 stars. What a fun start to a middle grade series about a magician and his young thief apprentice! I enjoyed this audio book. I liked both the main characters -- the young boy thief (who has a curious mind and isn't afraid to ask questions) and the master magician who respected his apprentice and also figured things out as the story went along (unlike many other middle grade books where it seems the adults are always clueless).

Read aloud to my 9-year old. Cute and enjoyable, but like many middle grade fantasies, I just didn’t feel that it was as strong as I would hope for. I think I may have too high of expectations when I read middle grade!

It's the classic orphan meets mentor story, but in a new setting and with different rules.

Quite good. I listened to it on audiobook, but I hear that the physical book has acrostics in it that give out clues to the story. I'd be interested in getting my hands on a copy to check it out.

re-reading childhood favourites is always an adventure in and of itself - you never know exactly what you're going to find. i remember this book being gorgeous: dark and gritty, with enough mystery and metaphors that it felt cool and different.
looking at 'the magic thief' now, i still see echoes of those sentiments, but it feels pretty fomulaic-ly middle-grade fantasy to me. i'm pretty biased, because my copy is close to falling apart, but connwaer's world feels so inherently special, that it kind of felt like coming home anyway.
