I tried. I couldn’t get a feel for the stakes. Though I really enjoyed the interesting magic system, I couldn’t feel the looming threat and fear of why they would fail. I also count connect to any of the characters.

I loved reading this book!
It’s Avatar the Last Airbender but make it Victorian & instead of mastering the elements you burn metals to manipulate your surroundings. Also with a few “avatars” instead on one.
I also think the story is very similar in tone & characters to Six of Crowd by Leigh Bardugo. But it read a little more mature to me, while Six of Crows felt more YA. But I think if you enjoyed one you’d enjoy the other.
The world & magic system are so well thought out. Every time I thought I found a loophole it was explained away soon after as if the author was reading my mind!
This book honestly felt like a stand alone. But I am still eager to pick up the next in the series!

I was going to DNF this book halfway through. It took so long to get started but I’m SO GLAD I DIDN’T!

I absolutely fell in love with these characters. Found family is my all time favorite and this story had a lot of that. There was too much death though and I’m a sap. I want everyone alive and happy and healthy at the end of a story but with stories that go like this, it was inevitable.

The ending was really rushed but it makes sense as there’s like 57 more books in this series so…do I pick up the next one? Can I handle the heartbreak? Stay tuned.

My Thoughts:

Mistborn: The Final Empire is the first Brandon Sanderson book that I’ve read, and I’m glad I did. One of my closest friends from college suggested that we buddy-read the Misborn series, and let me tell you, we’re having a blast so far. I am currently postponing a bunch of my TBR books in order to make way for the sequel - The Well of Ascension. So, we will definitely finish the series and will most likely buddy-read The Way of Kings next.

The Final Empire was captivating, adventurous, dark, and mysterious. I didn’t know too much going in apart from the book description and stellar reviews, and I was sucked into the world from the first sentence: “Ash fell from the sky.”

I don’t want to spoil the book for anyone, so I will just say that the magic system is unique. I really like the fact that there are required materials in order to produce magic and that each material brings about a different magical effect. The magic system is woven nicely into the world and works well for the plot.

I was rooting for the characters from the get-go, which wasn’t too hard given the political atmosphere and social structure that Sanderson created. The relationship between Vin and Kelsier was heartwarming. I think that Vin is a very strong female lead; however, my favorite character is Sazed. I just wanted to give him a hug at all times.

Brandy Sandy is a wonderful writer, and I can’t wait to enjoy more of his work. Highly recommend!
