Meh. Clunky, racially problematic, and rather dull.

This is my first Civil War novel that I remember reading, so my judgement needs to be taken with a grain of salt, since I don't read the material a lot. Three stars for me is a decent rating. Its an okay book, I can see why people would love it I just don't fully feel that way. And to be honest, up to the ending I was ready to give this book 4/5 stars. However, the ending picked up too quick of a pace. And although I loved the foreshadowing with The Scarlet Letter, I feel as though Annie deserved more. A different ending to her story. In addition this book had a lot of forbidden romance promised, but to stay non-spoiler, that promise is not really kept. In fact I could argue that Annie was in love with someone else for half the book.
Stuart duh...
Annie was a good main character though. And for the most part wasn't too much of a Mary Sue. (Also Laurence <3)

Overall, it often felt like this novel oversimplified a complex issue in an attempt to make it more digestible to young readers, and failed to bring any real depth to what was, plot wise, a compelling story. Although I wasn't overly impressed by this novel, it was an easy and quick read and would probably be a good introduction to a younger reader just starting on longer novels with an interest in the Civil War.
