Have to go neutral with this rating bc it was so dense that I had difficulty attending for most of the book.

One of the best books I have ever read in my entire life. It will change your entire perspective on Latin America. The sheer amount of bloodshed and ecological destruction wreaked on the indigenous, African, and then the mixed peoples of LatAm is heart wrenching.
Eduardo went to bat for his continent and took great personal risk in writing this wonderfully prosaic, wryly funny and compelling book during a time when most of the continent was under the iron grip of fascist dictatorships. If you were to read only one book about LatAm, make it this one.
