Laatst stond de Graham Norton show bij ons aan in de woonkamer. Daar kwam Michael Palin zijn nieuwste boek promoten, Noord-Korea dagboek. Ik was gelijk geïntrigeerd. Ik had niks meegekregen van het feit dat hij hier een documentaire heeft mogen filmen. Tijdens deze documentaire heeft hij in een notitieblokje allemaal aantekeningen bijgehouden. Het resultaat is dit boek.
In toegankelijke taal, met veel verschillende foto's is Noord-Korea dagboek een uniek boek dat een kijkje biedt in een over het algemeen nog zeer onbekende samenleving. Michael Palin bezoekt steden, het platteland, toeristentrekpleisters, hotels en prachtige natuur.
Het boek biedt geen verdiepende informatie over Noord-Korea. Maar als je geïnteresseerd bent in een toeristische ervaring naar Noord-Korea, is dit boek zeker voor jou weggelegd!

I fine tie-in to the TV series and Michael Palin is nice as always but there's nothing new here.

After digesting Barbara Demick's extraordinary work, Nothing to Envy, this felt a little light and a quick read. That's no disrespect to Michael Palin, who is a national treasure here in the UK. After all, this is a travelogue journal rather than a thoroughly researched book. Some wonderful and charming moments in this but the skeptic (and possibly naivety!) in me wonders if it was all for show. It seemed too nice and friendly. Perhaps the DPRK are softening, but time will tell if the Trump-Kim summit and meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in in 2018 carry any weight. Surely these historic moments offer some hope for the future.

Fantastic book with lovely pictures about Micheal Palin's visit to North Korea. Liked reading this whilst watching the same scene in the TV-show.
