I Hated You First

3.24 AVERAGE

Very minor spoilers- only ones that are essential to the plot line.

I had the pleasure of receiving the ARC of I Hated You First by Rachel John. I’m a total romcom fan and this one sounded right up my alley. I was so excited to start it and that excitement never waned. I was sucked in from the first chapter and finished it in one sitting (well technically a few sittings because I moved from the couch to my cozy booknook to my bed because I couldn’t put it down til I finished in the wee hours of the morning) and it was so lovely.

I Hated You First was a surprisingly emotional read. I thought I was getting a simple and lighthearted romcom with the brothers best friend trope, which is my absolute favorite.

Our main character, Lauren, works for the family business and kicks butt at her job overseeing all the men in the warehouse. One of those men? Clay. Her brother’s best friend, the receiver of her hidden love, and her biggest nuisance.

Clay has had a thing for his buddy’s little half sister for as long as he can remember. But because of the tense family dynamics that come from a blended family, Clay felt like he needed to support his friend who had been through a pretty major traumatic event that still impacted his life daily.

Clay couldn’t hide his love for Lauren forever though. As we all know, hidden things always end up surfacing at some point and when Clay decides to let it all out, it’s beautiful.

This book was funny, sweet, emotional and left me cheering for Lauren and Clay. Y’all need to pick this one up!
