An interesting and diverse book, sam and laylas romance was a whirlwind. The enemies to lovers while fighting their feelings was a fun ride but I got in a slump nonetheless.

Though certainly perfect for one another, the toxicity of the surrounding bachelor and business drama just put a grey cloud over the book for me. Neeshas DV experience I feel was handled well though.  Overall, it seemed like a great representation of the diversity of Indian culture but as I’m not part of the culture myself it’s an opinion to be taken with a pinch of salt.

This book was an emotional roller coaster that I did not need. I wasn’t a fan of Sam and Layla’s relationship. I thought it was very unhealthy. I also hated how every male character was written. Not every man constantly thinks about banging women…

Overall, I found Sam and Layla’s relationship confusing.. Things moved way too fast to be believable, (
him acting as a “chaperone” after knowing each other 48 hours? her squeezing his leg under the table to get him to stop talking on the first date? they randomly started calling each other boyfriend/girlfriend without a conversation about it??
) and I know it’s a romance and doesn’t have to be believable all the time, but this was just too out of this world.
Also some descriptions of Layla’s body read so much like a man was writing the novel.. Enough said, I think.
I thought the ending was pretty predictable, but I did think it was cute and is the reason it got an extra .5 stars from me.

a cheesy rom-com

i don’t mind cheesy rom-coms in the least. so that’s not the reason i didn’t really like this.

i hated the love interest. i hated all the undealt with misogyny. i hated the way the author wrote when in sam’s pov and didn’t seem to find a problem with what they were writing.

the plot was fine. the story was okay. layla was underwhelmingly average and sam was awful. i liked royce better than i did him and that says a LOT.

i did understand sam’s need to get justice for his sister though. i think others calling him selfish for putting his sister first is also misogynistic and stupid. its wrong of him to quit being a doctor and get his sister’s ex-husband in jail for what he did to her simply bc he isn’t fulfilling every poc parents’ dream by being a doctor? bullshit.

all in all, i’d give this 3 stars and 2 🌶🌶 as well.

This started off slow but by the end I waa really invested. There was a great, diverse ensemble cast and I found the characters super loveable. Can’t wait to read the next one!

NOT A ROMANCE WHERE THE GIRL PROPOSES 😭 I was appalled. Other than that, this was a very safe, averagely entertaining romance. I liked the story but at times I felt like the writing jumped around too much. Layla and Sam were very Wattpad in both an enjoyable and cringey way. The spice was there but lacking. One thing I did like was how quickly their miscommunication problems were always solved. This was a very solid, Hallmark channely angst-less romance.

Really my only issue was this book was that it relied a little to heavily on pop culture references (eg., Layla references the Princess Bride a lot and it even makes an appearance in the epilogue where Sam now knows what it is). I don't mind if books have sprinklings of references but this one almost seemed ingrained in the character development.
The plot of the book was definitely weaker than the characters, but honestly I would much rather have it that way than the reverse. I found the characters enjoyable and relatable if not possibly needing a bit more grounding. The side characters were very enjoyable and I'm glad to be seeing more of them in the sequels which I will happily read.
