a cheesy rom-com

i don’t mind cheesy rom-coms in the least. so that’s not the reason i didn’t really like this.

i hated the love interest. i hated all the undealt with misogyny. i hated the way the author wrote when in sam’s pov and didn’t seem to find a problem with what they were writing.

the plot was fine. the story was okay. layla was underwhelmingly average and sam was awful. i liked royce better than i did him and that says a LOT.

i did understand sam’s need to get justice for his sister though. i think others calling him selfish for putting his sister first is also misogynistic and stupid. its wrong of him to quit being a doctor and get his sister’s ex-husband in jail for what he did to her simply bc he isn’t fulfilling every poc parents’ dream by being a doctor? bullshit.

all in all, i’d give this 3 stars and 2 🌶🌶 as well.

While I enjoyed Layla and Sam's rivals to lovers relationship, I just can not get passed the amount of sexual harassment Sam experienced in the workplace and it was never really addressed. What made it was worse like it almost seemed like it was supposed to be humorous, but nothing about inappropriately touching your co-worker is actually humorous.

Not to mention, the insertion of abusive exes,
Sam's sister's ex-husband was an alcoholic and had a mean streak. He results pushes her down the stairs (putting her into a wheelchair) and having the hospital cover it up. Oh, and Karen (a co-worker who sexual harassed Sam) had an ex-husband similar to his sister's. She ends up help get the justice for his family, but it doesn't excuse her behavior for majority of the book.
misogyny, and over-the-top caricature blind dates to make Sam seem like the best choice.

I really wanted to enjoy this book a lot more, but I feel more meh about it than anything.
