I had been worried that any sequel to An Absolutely Remarkable Thing would pale in comparison to that wonderful work, but I was clearly worried for nothing!! This book was gorgeous and thoughtful and hopeful and emotional and so many other incredible things. I enjoyed reading it immensely, and this will certainly be a book I return to whenever I need a reminder about the beautiful parts of humanity.

Oh it was so self indulgent. I cannot imagine living in a world like this, where presence on the internet is all anyone thinks about, and checking Twitter is a constant, and being rich is just a thing you do because of the internet and/or your parents. The stilted dialogue and naval gazing did imply an over reliance on the internet for social interaction in all of our first-person-narrative protagonists. Their voices were all very similar considering their different backstories. It stank of the kind of first world problems that come with never working a real job in your life, or having struggles with money/neglect/trauma.

I'm sure there's some important philosophising in this book to someone but that someone doesn't seem to be me. I spent most of the book just hoping we'd get to the point of the story (preferably the sci-fi stuff) and stop preaching being nice all the time, you know? It felt like it could've done with more editing and could've happily lost 100+ pages without losing any impact. I genuinely feel like a bit of a dick for saying it though, so that's the book's doing - draggy but makes you feel bad for complaining that it dragged a little. The messages that were so heavy-handedly delivered were probably important but completely irrelevant to me, because I sincerely doubt I'm going to ever find myself in a position where I can help shape the global market and redistribute wealth fairly.
