A astoundingly good book. I read this in two sittings - easier, I suppose in the graphic novel format. But you have to take a bit of time because there's a rich quality to the drawings that go well beyond the words on the pages.

The book is deep - a personal journey. The journey of a family. Cultural and economic drivers. Toxic masculinity but with a little bit of compassion for people who are doing what they have to do and are twisted by the experience. The grim reality of our extractive industries and their cost not just on the environment but on people.

I'm from Alberta and have visited the oil sands/tar sands/bitumenous sands as part of a student delegation. This visit and keeping up with news scrapped the surface of the life and challenges covered by Beaton, so while I wasn't surprised by the stories, I was deeply interested and not disappointed. I hope others are able to access this wonderful work.

I did not like it as much as I hoped I would! At the beginning, I could see the potential for some really great weaving of interconnected themes, but it never really came together for me. There were also a lot of scenes/pages that seemed to be dropped out of nowhere, unrelated to the main/any plot, and tho I can appreciate a slice of life, in the context of this book I didn’t really understand why they were included.
