i recently discovered Josh Lanyon and so far I'm having a good time
this one had a nice locked room cold case mystery, a nice doze of predictability but enough surprises to keep you engaged and entertained.

Not bad, I think I would've liked it better if wasn't ebook format, that slowed me down a lot.

Another great one from Josh! Loved the story. I figured out the mystery very early on (18%) but I think that's something that was on purpose (the clues get quite heavy handed later on). But the storytelling was so compelling I had to keep reading to find out what would happen. The mystery was def not as "mysterious" as many of Josh Lanyon's other stories, but I loved the main character. I also really enjoyed the inside look into the very odd family.

3.5 Stars Rounding Up

I read most of this last night when I couldn't fall asleep. This is my second Josh Lanyon book, so I'm still not sure if I'm super into her style or not.

That being said, I did enjoy this book much more than the other one I read, perhaps it was due to the mystery story line.

I liked how the mystery played out and the building attraction between Griff and Pierce.

There was no closing himself off from it. They were joined in the here and now. They were together in this moment. And this moment felt like forever.

Really enjoyed it. One mystery was obvious fairly early on, but still needed to see how all the threads tied together.

Although this was an enjoyable book it was SO PREDICTABLE.

I have read lots of Lanyon books and expect her to lead me on a formulaic merry dance of mystery and intrigue and then do a surprise reveal - That's the pay off for sticking with a story. However, from the get go I knew who 'missing child' Brian Arlington was and in a round about way whodunnit.

The plot was rehashed, repeated, regurgitated round and round, with the odd dream insight from Griff as to what the hell was going on.

The romance took a long time to get going, and it took a leap of imagination to think of good looking but hard-assed Pierce falling in love so quickly, but when it did there were some graphic, well scripted sex scenes.

SpoilerI must say found the connotation that Pierce and Brian had been close when they were children -4? and 14?, and would eventually get together as adults and become lovers - and Pierce saying 'I've loved you my whole life' distinctly disturbing and creepy, NOT romantic

Ultimately, it was an enjoyable, and well written story, but the plot was too predictable, lacked intrigue and was not as well crafted as other Lanyon stories.

Reading [b:Stranger on the Shore|20738173|Stranger on the Shore|Josh Lanyon|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1395710577s/20738173.jpg|40068387] is like meeting an old friend after a long time. This is classic Josh in a subgenre he does best.

Twenty years old mystery, rich people problems, nod to [b:The Great Gatsby|4671|The Great Gatsby|F. Scott Fitzgerald|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1361191055s/4671.jpg|245494] and a slow-developing romance between a journalist and a pushing lawyer.

I chucked half a star off only because I figured main plot far too soon. There were too many clues dropped at the beginning and I think it considerably downplayed the big reveal...

It's so good to have you back, Josh. :)

p.s. How cool is name Pierce for a lawyer?

3 star romance, 4 star mystery. Stronger on the romance than previous Lanyon books I've read, but it still takes second fiddle to the mystery. Chemistry was a bit awkward.

Quotes:

You could instruct, you could even train people to ignore their biases, but that didn’t erase the existence of those biases. Everyone had their prejudices, their “natural inclinations.” They persisted like the faded stain of mineral deposits, even after education and experience raised the waterline.
