“[Squire] is a story about someone stuck between conflicting existences realizing that empire never holds place for the conquered”

I really loved this graphic novel! One, because I am always a sucker for women with swords. But two, it tackled very pertinent issues that push readers to question and contemplate real world stances. As we follow Aiza’s story, we delve into how imperialist empires wield propaganda and dehumanization to maintain colonialism. Perpetuating the false notion that integration is possible for the conquered if they simply comply, but then encouraging racism and xenophobia amongst the populace to maintain an us vs them mentality so unity is never possible.

I like how Aiza signed up to be a squire because she wanted to be a hero, and by the end of the story she fully realizes that dream. Just not in the way she expected. This felt like only the beginning of Aiza’s story so I wouldn’t be surprised if we get some sequels in the future!
